This list is based on the book « The Inscriptions of the Old British Cemetery of Leghorn » by Gery Milner-Gibson-Cullum and Francis Campbell Macauley, Giusti, Livorno, 1906. The order of the burials follows the original order of the book. The first part of the list (black) contains Englishmen and Americans, the last part of the list ( blue) are people from other nationalities. Married women have both their surnames; I used the form: ‘married name’ née ‘former name’ if this can be clearly deducted from the inscription. The date of death is the one that appears on the funeral inscription as reported by the 1906 book. An asterisk beside the date indicates that the person has then been removed from Livorno. An exclamation mark indicates a correction apported by further knowledge (i.e. internet users, researches, etc…), followed by the correction.
Places :
L = Livorno ; P = Pisa ; F = Firenze ; Lu = Lucca ; BdL = Bagni di Lucca ; BdM = Bagni di Montecatini ;
? = Death place not explicitely specified on the funeral inscription.

Hi Matteo, your (brilliantly helpful) list shows 6 people who are my direct ancestors, or their close relations.
Mary CAMPBELL née MACLEAN 1829 ?
Lauchlan MACLEAN 1829 ?
E. A. CROKAT née ? 1825 L
Emma Christiana CROKAT 1825 ?
Helen CROKAT 1827 ?
Peter CROKAT 1822 L
Mary Campbell (nee Maclean) was the mother of Elspeth Arbuthnot Crokat (nee Campbell) and the niece of Lauchlan / Lachlan Maclean (a retired General)
Elspeth Arbuthnot Crokat was the mother of Emma Christiana Crokat and Helen Crokat. Elspeth died 30 Sept 1825 aged 32, a few months after the birth of Emma Christiana (her 7th child).
One of Elspeth’s other daughters, Mary Anne Crokat, who married George Moberly in England in 1834, is my great great grandmother.
I am not sure who Peter Crokat is, but wonder if “Peter” is actually “Patrick” – in which case he is Mary Anne Crokat’s uncle (her father’s brother).
Mary Anne Crokat lived in Livorno with her family from the age of about 5 to about 20 (about 1817 to 1832 or 33). Her father was a Scottish merchant there, who had previously lived in Palermo. There is a fascinating chapter in a book written by Mary Anne Crokat’s daughter describing Mary Anne’s life in Italy, referencing Leghorn (Livorno), Naples and Genoa. The book, “Dulce Domum”, by Charlotte Anne Elizabeth Moberly, is available online at https://archive.org/stream/dulcedomumgeorge00mobeuoft/dulcedomumgeorge00mobeuoft_djvu.txt (see chapter II – “MARY ANNE CROKAT”).
I am planning to visit the cemetery next week and hope to track down all these graves. If you happen to know where exactly they are, that would be a great help! Thank you. Andrew Moberly
Matteo – Your list of burials also includes Christiana CAMPBELL. She is the sister of Elspeth Arbuthnot Crokat (nee Campbell), mentioned in my post of 14 October 2022
Yes Andrew I’ve studied her in the past.
I’d be interested in any information you found out about her?
I notice two LEFROY burials 1739 & 1748. I believe another of this family is interred there – Anthony LEFROY.
Sce: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.42039/page/n165
The author – Sir Egerton BRYDGES was himself a noted genealogist who’s sister Anne married into the LEFROY family in 1778.
Congratulations on the site!
Hello Michael, thanks for writing. The burial of Anthony is well noted in the list, I have done extensive research on the family and I’m in touch with several descendants. Rev. George Lefroy married Anne Brydges, and he was a son of Anthony, this is very well known 🙂
Aha!
I see him now in 1779. And Pierre & Julie Langlois (L’Anglois) are probably connected too.
Thanks for the response.
I’m researching an Irish branch of the Lefoys who married into the Stein family (of Scottish Distilling renown). They lived at “Dunedin” & “Birchgrove” in Monkstown Co.Dublin until 1937.
Yes they are connected by marriage. As for the branch you mentioned, I am aware of it, are you a descendant?
Hello Matteo! We were in touch a few years ago…I am looking for the Pate family, originally from England and was wondering where they may be buried? I have copies of letters that leads me to believe that they lived in a place called Villa Franco at some point. I will be in Florence this July for a few days and would love to visit the cemetery.

I did not see the name “james McKnight,” an American Marine who was killed in a duel in k1802
Dear Raleigh C. Perry,
James McKnight is indeed in the list… just search using ctrl+F in your browser…
James M. KNIGHT 1802 L
Please, I am looking for the place of burial of my great-great grandfather, Giasone Rebuá, who was buried at the Livorno cemetery.
Thank you very much for any information.

Hi, Really appreciate the work and effort you’ve put in to make this resource and inforamtion so widely available. I was hoping to find some additional information about an “ancester – Rosa Melmont MARRIS who according to the IGI web site name Rosa Melmont Harris Or Marris gender Female
burial date 01 Dec 1849, burial place Leghorn, Tuscany, Italy age 22
The only additional information I have about her death is from the Administration of her estate – some considerable time later, in 1861 – which states “late of Pisa in Italy, spinster deceased who died 28 November 1849 at Pisa” Is there some additional information source you can suggest, please.
Regards, Peter
Dear Peter,
I just sent you an e-mail to discuss in detail your request. Your ancestor died indeed in Pisa in 1849 at 22 years old and was then carried in Livorno and buried in the New English Cemetery. Best Regards.
As I understand it, a Rear-Admiral Sir Thomas DILKES died at sea 12 Dec 1707 on HMS Chichester off Leghorn, and was buried in the British cemetery at Leghorn on the 14th of the month. He was quite an important person, being acting commander-in-chief of the British fleet in the Mediterranean. I am unable to find a listing for him in « The Inscriptions of the Old British Cemetery of Leghorn ». Do you have any suggestions for this omission?
I find your blog (and on-line genealogy) very interesting, and have discovered some merchant families (BOEHM, FONNEREAU, DU CANE, LUTYENS) amongst my (very)distant relatives.
Thank you.
Hello Mr. Thirlby,
first of all thank you for visiting my blog and for letting me have your commentary which is, indeed, a thought I had already made in my mind several times while studying Livorno’s records and the old English cemetery there.
The book “The inscriptions of the Old…” is not citing Admiral DILKES as you say and this means either that the grave was not anymore there (destroyed?) or that it was already very dilapidated and illegible around 1899-1906. Only one inscription appearing in the cited book exists for the year 1707 and is also about a Captain: Thomas THOMPSON, who died in July, 1707.
Now, the chapel records of the protestants of Livorno indicate that the Admiral was indeed buried there:
“Sir Thomas Dilkes, Rear-Admiral buried Dec: 3/14 1707”
Unfortunately the specific fact that the inscription’s book is not indicating the Admiral’s grave is the most difficult condition to be solved and his resting place won’t be found very soon, if ever.
Best Regards
Hello
I am looking for Plowman Young a doctor who was English and is said to be buried in Livorno English cemetery in 1840. I have not seen his name on the list. Are there any other lists available or other English cemeteries in Livorno.
Thanks for any information
Hello Hera,
well… you have it right here… this is the list for the old cemetery which was closed in 1838-40, so doctor Plowman appears in the list of the new cemetery… you can find the list in my posts.
Please can you contact me through e-mail so that we may speak on this subject please?
I have a photo of Plowman Young’s signature that was written on a wooden medicine box. He and other apprentices signed their names on the box which is still in the house where he trained in Norton, Suffolk under the apothecary surgeon Benjamin Clayton. There is no date but 2 of my ancestors also have their signatures on boxes, so I would imagine these would be from about 1810. It says Plowman Young Mildenhall. I will be putting it on my tree (Burt) on Ancestry
Ann Matilda Donall: Her name should read Ann Matilda McDouall. She was born 7 Feb 1810, Montreal, Lower Canada (QC), daughter of James McDouall & Elizabeth McKay. She died 1 Jul 1830 at Pisa, while on trip with her mother, a sister & her brother-in-law, John Jones a Montreal merchant. Cause of death: TB. I have John Jones’ travel diary recounting their year-long trip in which is noted Matilda’s death & burial.

Hello Barbara,
thank you VERY much. This kind of information is very important and it’s deeply related to the purpose of this project !
I edited the post with the correction, leaving also the original spelling as that list is the only official list at my knowledge until I do a physical survey of the graves (I am working on this…). Your source is also looking very intriguing. Is that a manuscript ? Where did they go during their trip ? Are there any descriptions of Pisa or Livorno in it? Any reference to people/merchants/friends living there?
Thank you again so much.
My apologies- almost a year before I picked up your reply & hence for my reply! re JOHN JONES’DIARY: several diary entries might interest you. Having your e-mail adrs would make it easier for me to send more space). I promise not to be so tardy next time!!!

extracts from JOHN JONES’ DIARY:
“13TH Jun [1830] Sunday; Arrived at Leghorn half past 10AM. Had a very pleasant time in coming to this place, pass’d several vessels in quarantine. Having being detained about an hour by the Health Officials were permitted to go on shore [Jones was coming from Genoa]. went on shore with my companion & friend Mr,. Town and procur’d lodging at the LOCANDA EUROPA, kept by an Englishwoman. the town was very gay in consequence of the procession that takes place annually similar to our Montreal shows.”
“14th Monday: Went with my letter of introduction to Bell de Yough & Co.; found Mr. de Yough an agreeable old bachelor. He advis’d me not to go to Pisa until the grand illuminara was over which would take place on Wednesday. Was much disappointed in Leghorn, nothing like an Italian town (or rather Genoa) a place of great commerce being a free port. An eruption of Mount Etna took place about this time, the ashes of which were [__?__} to this place.”

Hello Barbara, sorry for not having answered earlier. I just added the McDouall family in my database so I’d like to know if there are any other entries related to them or to Livorno. Thank you.
RE: David Barry buried Pisa 1781 Livorno. Is there any information about his origions, where he came from.
Isabel
Hello Isabella.
If you are interested in this David BARRY me and my french cousin Hélène Koehl are the right persons to question.
We wrote together an article on his wife, Amelia Evans. You can find some more info on the dedicated article (Amelia Evans-Barry) on this blog. I would really appreciate if you first tell me why you think you may be interested by THIS David Barry. He was an irish captain of merchant vessels in the Mediterranean.
