The present Dutch-German cemetery was opened in 1840. Before this date there was another very old cemetery for Dutch and German people which was authorised in 1695. In 1924 the mortal remains of those buried there were transferred to the “new” cemetery and put into an ossuary which still stands in the middle of the burial ground. Three slabs were placed on the walls of the small open structure which was built around the ossuary hole. In 2018 a very strong wind storm cracked an old cypress tree which feel over the ossuary, substantially damaging it. Several subscriptions were consequently launched online and offline to fund its restoration. I’ll keep you updated on the restoration process.
Each slab lists the names of the deceased for a given time-span:
Slab#1: c.1700-1794 (83 people)
Slab#2: 1795-1823 (115 people)
Slab#3: 1824-1839 (128 people)
There’s another slab which was placed there in 1990 listing 12 persons whose remains were then placed in the ossuary. Another memorial stone was hung on the North wall after WWII to commemorate people whose graves were destroyed by a bombing and for whom it has been possible to find names (11).
The following list was made by the deceased pastor Mauro Del Nista and Patrizia Meoli in April 1997 and printed in the book I “Giardini” della Congregazione Olandese-Alemanna, Debatte, Livorno, 2004.
I added a few more information in square brackets […].

Hi ,
My name is Lorraine and I am searching for information on Adam Gerdes.Do you have any more information about Adam Gerdes 1822 ?
I have very limited information about him . He is my fourth grandfather . He lived in Stockholm and was a Sea Captain. If you can find out any more facts about him, I would really appreciate it. I found this site when I googled his name and you have the same year of death that I have.
