***IMPORTANT: the Geneanet access information is superseded because Geneanet changed their access policies. Since a few days people needing access to a private database like mine need first to create a free account on Geneanet and either communicate to me their username or request access from inside the Geneanet platform to the database. The name of the Leghorn Merchant Networks database on Geneanet is “alivornesi”. I will update this page as soon as practical. Thank you for your attention.

The online database, hosted on the Geneanet platform, is now accessible only by password. All the links from the blog to the online database will not work until you receive specific access information (i.e.: password).  As soon as you receive your password you will need to fill out the access form on the geneanet database access page and your browser will ask whether you want to save it or not. If you choose to save the password then you won’t need to type it every time and all the links from the blog will then work seamlessly until your browser’s cache/cookies are cleaned.

After over 5 years of full public access to this database (geneanet id “alivornesi”) and 5 years of full public access to the previous versions of the database (geneanet id’s “mgiunti” and “mgiunti2″), the following reasons have encouraged this action:

  • I prefer to know who desires to access the database so that we can actively exchange information.
  • I wish to block ‘human photocopying machines’ (i.e.: people mass copying my data without ever contacting me).
  • I’d like the blog to be the portal to the database so that people will understand better my work.
  • I need to cover some of my research expenses, so access will be granted on a donation basis.
  • Some data sheets in the database contain unmasked personal notes and comments which I do not wish to be public.
  • Some websites might copy the entire database without my knowledge and try to sell it along with other data.

Nota Bene: access to the database is intended as a ‘friend’ access. This access will unlock all basic family information and structure, witness information and marriage notes but not bibliography, transcribed primary sources, digital acts and documents, digital portraits, etc… For these you will need to get in touch with me by e-mail and I will check the availability. ‘Friend’ access also means that I’d like to receive complementary information, corrections, additions and any other useful info.

An example data sheet: John Dick (c.1720-1804)

Scope: the database is not about my own family but it’s intended to depict an entire merchant network. I do treat all data that is being researched in the same way: there’s no preferred family or families. All efforts are made to collect as much data as possible on all people and families involved in this network. This also means that the database includes many individuals, families and entire generations not directly connected to Livorno but needed to describe the network. In some cases families have been added as a working hypothesis and might then disappear when further research is made.

Names&Places List: To have an idea of the extent of the database and to check if it contains any of the families that you are interested in, I created a 500-pages alphabetical list ordered by family name with the corresponding city/town. You can dowload the PDF list or, if you are interested, check the project statistics.

____________

Requesting Access

to the

Leghorn Merchant Networks Online Database

.

To request access to the database you need to write me an e-mail letting me know about your interest and eventually the names of the families you are interested in, your affiliation to any academic institutions, and whether you plan to be publishing an article or book that might be using some of my data (needed if you want to know exact sources). You can then either wait for my answer or make a donation right away. I will provide access codes as soon as I receive the confirmation e-mail from Paypal.

IMPORTANT: People who can provide corrections and important complementary information will receive an access password without the donation requirement. I will evaluate the information you can provide very seriously.

There’s no minimum donation: I do trust your evaluation.

PayPal - The safer, easier way to pay online.

.

Access codes will not expire and, in case I need to change them, you will get the new codes. I will be more than happy to help you with any problem you might have in accessing the database.
