…an afternoon at the Old English Cemetery of Livorno: impressions, suggestions, contrasts…
I visited the cemetery many years ago to see Tobias Smollett’s grave. So pleased to see that the cemetery is being cared for and studied.

Dear Matteo,
I cannot commend you enough for the work you and your colleagues are doing in the cemetaries. I am visiting the Old English Cemetary on 15 June 2010 to view the tomb of Robert Bateman, who died in 1743. He was born in the village where I am now living (Ings, Cumbria, England) and, if possible, I would like to find information about his life in Livorno.
Hello Vivienne, I am aware of your visit and very happy about it. I have to say that it won’t be easy at all to find anything on Robert’s life in such a short time, but your visit will be, I hope, the beginning of a collaboration between Livorno and Ings! I really hope that in Ings or around we may find his baptism/birth… even if he’s one of the most known English merchants in Livorno, we don’t even know his father’s name!
Looking forward to meeting you.
Absolutely gorgeous pictures. I can’t wait to see the cemetery in person! Fantastic work, I always enjoy following your research.
Thank you very much Lisa. Looking forward for your visit.
These are wonderful. They really portray the atmosphere of the cemetery. The details of the stonework are really well captured. I especially like numbers 16, 17, 20 & 21
Thank you Sarah.
