British Consuls at Leghorn
I remember to had visited as child about 1935 a family of the British Consul at Livorno named Lamb (or so on),living in Scoglio della Regina
I was British Consul in Florence until April 2009. At the Consulate we have a list of British Consuls/legates/Ministers Plenipotentiary etc dating back to Lambert Blackwell. Some of these had responsibility for Florence and Livorno and others for one city only. While we have pen sketches for each, we don’t have a record of their spheres of responsibility. It would be worth making contact with the British Consulate in Florence
Greetings Ms. Macfarlane, thank you for writing a message here. I am aware of your Consulate in Florence, I’ve seen also the pictures of your visit to the Old English Cemetery. I am planning to contact the British Consulate of Florence with a project about it, we really hope to find some fundings to support this exceptional site. It’s not anymore acceptable to keep it in these conditions. Sarah Thompson and Diana Price are supporting us, I think you remember them. I am wondering whether we might get help by any institution in Great Britain.
Thank you for pointing me to the Consuls’ list in Florence. I will get in touch with them soon.
Best regards
Thanks Colin,
yes, all these information are well known to me and some of them are accessible on the geneanet part of this blog by clicking on relevant names. Thank you anyway for writing here, maybe someone finds this interesting or related to some other stories and willing to share it with us.
I am aware of three Consuls in Leghorn.
John Dick from ? to 1766 ( he sold the Consulate to John Udny)
John Udny 1766 to 1800. Married Salina Shore-Clevland in Pisa 1777. (interesting note: John Udny’s VICE Consul was also called John Udny and was appointed in 1778/9 until his transfer to Fiume, now ReiJka, Croatia. The Consul abandoned his post when French troops entered Leghorn in the morning of the 26 June 1796.
The VICE Consul (John Udny Jnr) assumed the post as ACTING Consul. He spent six months in chains at Porto Ferrajo was released and returned to the ACTING Consul post until his transfer to Fiume in 1800.
Alexander McBean was appointed as Consul in 1800 and remained until the onsulate was closed in 1815.
Hope this helps
